Spooky Snowdonia: Ten of Snowdonia’s Most Haunted Sites

Spooky Snowdonia: Ten of Snowdonia’s Most Haunted Sites

The existence of ghosts, spirits and other supernatural phenomena is a much-debated subject; nowhere more so than in Snowdonia, where many centuries’ worth of myths, legends and spooky stories are an integral part of our rich storytelling heritage.

The following are ten of Snowdonia’s most haunted sites, if the stories are to be believed…

1. Maes-y-Neuadd

Maes-y-Neuadd at Talsarnau, near Harlech, is a 14th century building, extended over the centuries to become a manor house, which is now run as a hotel. The hotel has a resident ghost, reputedly the spirit of a children’s nursemaid from centuries ago. She’s a friendly ghost, though; guests report feeling comforted by her presence, and drifting pleasantly off to sleep whenever she appears.

2. Castell y Bere

In its heyday Castell y Bere, a 13th century castle near Tywyn, was a stronghold of the princes of Gwynedd. Little remains of the building today, but the outline of towers and walls are still clearly visible. It’s said that a solitary, shadowy figure is sometimes seen standing at the ruins at sunset. As the sun slips out of sight over the surrounding hills, the figure slowly melts away.

3. The Faenol Estate

The Faenol Estate, Bangor, dates back to Tudor times and is said to have a very spooky chapel. Apparently, there is a strange bird-like ghost – reportedly the ghost of a man executed for illegally cutting down trees on the Estate – that perches in a tree, screeching at passers-by: “Woe! Woe’s me that I ever put a handle to my axe to fell the trees of Faenol!”

4. Aberconwy House

Aberconwy House in Conwy is a beautifully-preserved medieval merchant’s house which now has a shop on the lower floor and a museum upstairs. There have been several spooky goings-on reported at Aberconwy house, including the original mistress of the house seen sitting by the fireplace. Other reports include volunteers being prodded, creaking floorboards, rattling doors and even a door slammed in someone’s face.

5. The Black Boy Inn

The 16th century Black Boy Inn, in the heart of Caernarfon, is one of the oldest inns to survive in Wales. Centuries ago the inn backed onto a nunnery, and one of the most oft-reported spooky sightings at the Black Boy Inn is that of the ghost of a nun passing through the walls. There have also been reports of people feeling as if they’re being strangled when walking up the stairs.

6. Gwydir Castle

Parts of Gwydir Castle, in the Conwy Valley, date back to the 14th century. The castle is now run as a country house hotel. Many supernatural experiences have been reported at the castle over the centuries, including sightings of the ghost of a young woman, the smell of a rotting corpse, unexplained drops in temperature, the sound of children crying, the ghost of a dog and even a ghostly procession on the Great Terrace.

7. The Anglesey Arms

Another old Caernarfon pub, the Anglesey Arms was once the town’s customs house and sits next to the old hanging tower, at one time the place of execution of criminals. There are stories of glasses on high shelves moving of their own accord and even hanging in the air; darts sometimes jump out of the dart board; and there have been reports of invisible beings sitting at the end of guests’ beds.

8. Bardsey

Bardsey, off the Llyn Peninsula, has a very long history and there are many myths and legends attached to the island. Most of these concern King Arthur and Merlin, but there are ghost stories attached to Bardsey too. St Cafan built St Mary’s monastery on the island in the 6th century, and this was destroyed during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. There have been reported sightings of shadowy, cowled monks appearing along the shoreline; their appearance is said to be an omen of disaster coming to the area.

9. The Rhinogydd

The Rhinogydd mountain range has been described as Wales’ last true wilderness. One of the most popular walking routes around Rhinog Fawr starts at a medieval packhorse trail known as the Roman steps. Despite the steps not actually being Roman, there was plenty going on in Snowdonia in Roman times, and perhaps this is the background to the legend which says that a ghostly troupe of Roman soldiers with mules can sometimes be seen trudging up the steps; according to legend, anyone following the soldiers will be led to a secret stash of gold.

10. Plas yn Rhiw

Plas yn Rhiw, overlooking Hell’s Mouth on the Llyn Peninsula, has apparently existed as a dwelling for over a thousand years. Supernatural phenomena reported at Plas yn Rhiw include the ghostly footsteps and coughing of an old man, and the weeping spectral figure of a Victorian maiden.

Breckenridge, CO – Skiing & Lodging Deals!

Breckenridge, CO – Skiing & Lodging Deals!

Fun Breckenridge Colorado!

If you’ve just started skiing, the best places to practice when in Breckenridge are on the bases of either Peak 8 or Peak 9. That’s where the beginners’ trails are found. Trails that are designed for beginners are also known as green circle runs and are fully groomed. Since the fastest way to get to the top of the slopes is through the lifts, it is advisable that you choose your lodging near their starting areas. That way, you can reach the lifts earlier than the rest.

One way to get to the lifts that will take you to the green runs of Peak 8 is through the Breck-Connect Gondola, a set of enclosed 8-passenger carriages that start from a parking lot at the end of Park Avenue. The Gondola has stops at Shock Hill Station, the base of Peak 7 and the base of Peak 8. In looking for the cheapest lodging deals, we will consider its proximity to the said parking lot.

Where to get cheap lodging:

If you are not a stickler for privacy and can stand the snoring of your roommates, a dorm type room in nearby Fireside Inn would be your best bet. For a night, you’ll only need to spend $ 28. Fireside Inn is just a few blocks away from the starting point of the Breck-Connect Gondola. From here, you can either walk or catch a ride on a shuttle bus – for free.

As if that were not enough, you can also savor their FREE tea and cake every afternoon at 5 pm. Surely, none of the great deals in the vicinity can top this.

The facilities and amenities are pretty decent, not the kind you would usually find in the cheapest inns in most resorts; definitely not the kind you would find in urban places. Some of the noteworthy amenities are: Internet accessible via WiFi, a payphone, laundry facilities, TV lounge, and car parking. For those who are with their kids, a baby sitter can be available if you need one. Fax and photocopying services are likewise available for the workaholic individuals who just can’t go on a straight uninterrupted vacation.

Where to get the cheapest food:

Pizza is one of the all-time favorites after an extremely active day and not many sports can demand you to be as physically active as skiing. So after a day on the slopes of Peak 8, go straight to Fatty’s Pizzeria. It’s just a 2 minute walk from Fireside Inn. Having been around since 1975, it has become a favorite hang-out for both the locals and Breckenridge mainstays. The ambiance is very accommodating such that you can even take your noisy kids with you and people won’t mind.

Having Fun In Breckenridge Co. This Rocky Mountain ski resort always offers great atmosphere that instantly puts you in a good mood. If you’re not into good climate, Breckenridge deals provide you more activities than any tropical resort you find. The weather is warm enough but not hot, so you can easily stay at Breckenridge co deals for the whole day outside in just sandals and shorts, but don’t forget to put sunscreen.

Bamboo Sheets and the Benefits For Your Hotel

Bamboo Sheets and the Benefits For Your Hotel

While attending a bed and breakfast conference recently, I visited Inn Style in the vendor section to investigate what they had in the way of organic cotton sheets. Instead, I found organic bamboo sheets. The sheets I found are 100 percent bamboo fiber sheets, not a bamboo/cotton blend.

These sheets have all the benefits of satin, silk, and high quality Egyptian cotton bed sheets, with few of the disadvantages of any of them. The price is quite reasonable. Nothing slips off them during the night (the way you experience satin sheets). The hand (how it drapes across your hand) is heavenly. These sheets, be they knit or woven, are soft, supple, and silky to the touch.

Bamboo and silk fibers are more easily damaged by bleaching than other fabrics, so using baking soda and white vinegar in your wash and rinse cycles, respectively, are a better way of keeping sheets clean, bright and soft (and not stinking of perfumes found in fabric softeners). If the sheets get a tough stain, StainSolver is a powerful oxygen bleach you can safely use on them. Bamboo sheets also fair better with a cold-water wash, rather than a warm- or hot-water wash. Think of the comfort you create and the money you save with these laundry changes!

Bamboo sheets are a great alternative to organic cotton because bamboo grows readily much less water than cotton, and without fertilizers or pesticides. By buying natural-colored, undyed sheets, you have completed the cycle of natural bedding. And they feel so good you are taking care of your guests, treating them like royalty, but on a reasonable budget.

The knit bamboo sheets I bought from Inn Style to experiment with came in several, softly-hued colors; I chose natural. I later found white, 250 thread-count woven bamboo sheets at Sam’s club. They are a much better quality than any discount bed sheet I’ve ever experienced or purchased. The fabric in both sets of of bamboo sheets is soft and drapes nicely. They breathe well, helping keep your guests comfortable all night.

Personally I have preferred jersey-knit sheets because I live in a cool-temperature climate and these sheets regulated my temperature year ’round. I was concerned that I was going to lose that temperature balance if I gave up my knit sheets. Neither of the bamboo sheet sets is a problem for me; I maintain the right temperature while I sleep.

The sheets were soft when we first opened the package. Each have been laundered only twice, so far, but the laundry results are positive. When I removed the knit sheets from the drier the first time, after a few hours of being crumpled, I was relieved to see they weren’t terribly wrinkled. Both sets are somewhat wrinkled after the laundry cycle, which will be a problem for some people, but a non-issue for me. I’ll report again after we’ve had them longer and washed them many more times.

Organic bamboo sheets are a natural for the lodging industry. Bamboo is ecofriendly in its growth patterns, and if you take care of your bamboo sheets naturally, they also are good for your guests with allergies and chemical sensitivities. You can buy them at several places, but Inn Style and Sam’s is where I started.
